Fear Free in practice

What Fear Free actually means here.

Every exam room is designed with your pet's comfort in mind — pheromone diffusers, soft surfaces, and a team trained to read and respond to animal stress signals before they escalate. The cat areas and dog areas are managed separately to keep stress low from the moment you walk in.

We pre-medicate anxious patients with appropriate anti-anxiety support when our doctors and owners agree it will make the visit better. For exotic species, we take extra care to respect each animal's unique stress thresholds — a bearded dragon and a parrot have very different ideas about what a good exam looks like, and we know the difference.

Sometimes the first five minutes is a doctor sitting quietly while a rabbit decides she's okay. Nobody here is in a hurry. Nurturing happiness isn't a slogan — it's how we actually practice.

"We built this clinic from the ground up — literally. Our 2024 facility was designed around one idea: every pet deserves gold-standard care, and every owner deserves to leave knowing their animal is genuinely better off for the visit. Dogs, cats, parrots, tortoises — they all count." — Dr. Sara de Wet, DVM, MPH · Medical Director, Lucks Lane Veterinary Clinic

Common questions

Five questions we hear most weeks.

Are you a 24/7 emergency clinic?

No. We are a general-practice clinic open Monday–Friday 8am–6pm. For after-hours emergencies we refer to the Veterinary Emergency Center of Richmond or Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners. Same-day sick visits during open hours are available — call (804) 594-3545.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. We welcome new clients with dogs, cats, and exotic pets across Richmond, Chesterfield, Midlothian, Powhatan, Henrico, and surrounding areas. Visit /new-clients to download intake forms ahead of your first visit.

Do you see exotic pets — rabbits, birds, reptiles, and other species?

Yes — exotic species care is a core part of what we do. We see birds (parrots, chickens, and more), reptiles (turtles, lizards, snakes), amphibians, small mammals (rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets), and other pocket pets. Call us to confirm we see your specific species before your first visit.

Do you offer wellness plans, and are they pet insurance?

We offer wellness plan tiers (Puppy & Kitten $59/mo, Adult $45/mo, Senior $65/mo) covering routine preventive care — exams, vaccines, and bloodwork. They are not pet insurance and do not cover illness, emergencies, or surgery. See /wellness-plans for the full inclusion list.

How do I book an appointment?

Call (804) 594-3545 Monday–Friday between 8am and 6pm, or use the online booking form at /new-clients. We recommend bringing your pet's vaccine history and any prior medical records to your first visit.
